Range Hoods

Shopping for range hoods isn’t as glamorous as say, shopping for a new car or designer clothing. However, range hoods can be an expensive purchase and no range hood is more expensive than the wrong range hood, so you need to shop wisely. There’s a huge variety of range hoods available to you, whether you have an electric range or a gas range, own a freestanding range or a cooktop model. You’re not limited, either, to a certain manufacturer based on your particular range. Range hoods are fairly universal, as far as compatibility with your range or cooktop. Before you start comparing range hoods, you’d do well to measure the width of the space where it will be installed. You can then narrow your search results down to the range hoods that come in that size. This will save you a good deal of sorting and give you more time to compare extra features and the various styles available. There’s quite an array of styles and designs available. There are the most basic models in finishes to match the most basic appliances and then there are some pretty snazzy models that are more modern or contemporary in style. Regardless of your taste or budget, with just a few clicks, you’ll be able to find the perfect range hood for your kitchen. ... View more - View less

Range Hoods Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

Cooking can generate unpleasant odors over time, and also cause steam to build up around the cooking area. Range hoods eliminate such fumes and odors that might linger in your kitchen by sucking in all the unwanted air. Although range hoods are straightforward to buy, there are a few things you should know before buying one for your kitchen so that you can get the best value for your money, and the best range hood to suit your needs.

Why Buy Range Hoods?

Range hoods are placed above stoves and cooktops in kitchens and are used to get rid of the smoke, steam, and odors that accumulate as a result of cooking. The presence of sealed heating systems in your kitchen, along with insulation and double glazing, prevents circulation of fresh air, ultimately resulting in increased moisture levels and redundant odors. Such an environment can be a playground for bacterial and fungal growth. Range hoods and exhaust fans serve as one of the most essential appliances that must be purchased if you want your kitchen to be an odor-free and grease-free cooking zone. In these range hoods, airborne grease that results from cooking is collected on the washable or disposable grease filters on these hoods.

Though range hoods are often sold along with the stove, they can be purchased independently, too. There is an extensive range of cooker range hoods available on the market from a variety of manufacturers such as Vent-A-Hood and Broan, and the right choice could play a great role in your kitchen’s hygiene. Create a healthier environment for cooking with the appropriate kitchen range hood.

How to Select the Right Size and Suction Capacity

It is very important that the range hood you purchase is appropriate in size and capacity for your kitchen. Ensure that the range hood matches the size of your stove; for instance, a 36-inch wide range will require a hood with a mouth of 36 inches as well.

Generally, cooking range hoods should be as long as your stove, as this facilitates proper suction of all the smoke and steam coming off the range while cooking. The rule of thumb when selecting range hoods is that they should be at least as wide as the cooking surface. However if space permits, it is ideal that you get a hood which is around 6 to 12 inches larger than your cooking surface. In addition to the cooking surface, it is wise to consider the ceiling of the area, as well as the wall around the stove.

Suction capacity of a range hood generally depends on two factors –the common cooking method used and the kitchen size. A shortcut to finding the correct capacity is to simply multiply the volume of the room by 10. Fitting a range hood with this capacity guarantees your kitchen efficient and complete air circulation.

Types of Range Hoods

Chimney and Island range hoods: A relatively expensive option when compared to other range hoods, this hi-tech model comes with lamps, and recent designs of chimney hoods have an angled structure, which is especially suitable for tall people. Island range hoods are also visible from all four sides and boast high-performing, top-quality exhaust fans. You can also get attachments or accessories such as utensil rails, spice racks and back plates to augment the look of this model. If you would like to take a look at a chimney or island range hood, two good examples are the Kenmore 36 in Italian Chimney Range Hood, and the Miele DA5100 Island Range Hood.

Integrated cooking range hoods: These models blend easily into kitchens, and are preferable if the design of your kitchen is important to you. These range hoods are often a part of modular kitchens, wherein the price of the hood is normally included in the entire cost of the kitchen. Integrated range hoods are usually fitted between wall units and come with a door on the front, which helps hide the appliance from sight. Depending on whether the door is opened or closed, the lights are activated in the range hood, illuminating your entire cooking surface in the process.

Canopy range hoods: These hoods are fitted into either wooden, metal, or decorative canopies and are available with single or twin motors. They are visible only when viewed from below, thus giving your kitchen an orderly appearance without any bulky fittings.

Telescopic range hoods: These hoods can be brought out when necessary. They perform well and can be stowed away into your wall cabinet and pulled out when you need to use them.

You can choose to either extract unwanted air or recirculate air in the kitchen. Most of range hoods available can be set either to extraction or recirculation mode. In the recirculation mode, the oil vapor and the dirty air that is generated from the cooking process is filtered by the range hoods and reprocessed to produce clean air. This 'scrubbed' clean air is then directed back into the kitchen. These filters with activated charcoal can be installed just about anywhere you want in your kitchen. Another benefit of fitting a range hood with a recirculation mode is that the initial cost associated with the appliance will be comparatively less as ducting is not required. However, the downside is that there are chances that some heat and moisture will be recirculated back into the kitchen. Also, initial costs may be less, but you might have to bear the cost along the way as the charcoal filters will have to be replaced at regular intervals.

In the extraction mode, the smoke, smells, and grease produced during cooking are taken directly outside with the help of the ducting system. This method helps in taking away airborne contamination and also saves the trouble of having to replace charcoal filters. However, you can’t really opt for this system if you have a space constraint in your home.

Features to Look For

The ducting system: This may be round, rectangular, or flexible. The round duct encourages air flow, while the rectangular one is good for limited spaces.

Ventilation and filtration systems: Understanding and reviewing the ventilation system of your ranger hood is very important as it plays a key role in removing smoke from your kitchen. There are two types of range hoods – ones which have their own filtration system and others which are connected to the ductwork of the building. Range hoods that come with their own filtration system suck the smoke released during the cooking process, filter it, and then release it again. Nevertheless, if you are choosing range hoods that have a filtration system of their own, make sure that the filters are easy to clean and replace. If you can get filters that are dishwasher safe, they are an added advantage as well.

Multi-speed range hood: This is another interesting option. These cooking range hoods permit different levels of ventilation depending upon the smoke that is generated as a result of cooking.

Though the main purpose of a range hood is to filter unpleasant cooking odors, it is always good that you give some thought to its appearance as well. Ineptly built range hoods will not give your kitchen the modern look you yearn for, and if you’re going to invest money into a quality appliance, you certainly don’t want one that will be an eyesore!
