Desktops

Desktop computers are typically found in offices and homes in semi-permanent locations. They are intended to be set-up and left in one location, as opposed to being portable, like laptop, tablet and netbook computers. Desktops are often called “PC’s” (short for personal computers) and fall into two configurations: the all-in-one unit, which has the computer hard drive, processor, power supply and other components built-into the monitor assembly and desktop computers – a stand-alone “tower” that sits on the desk or floor, or a horizontal case that usually sits below the monitor. Desktops commonly have larger hard drives and offer greater options to customize and upgrade the computer, such as adding memory chips, and upgraded sound and graphics cards. Both types include communications ports to connect to the Internet or local computer networks with Ethernet cables. The most popular manufacturers are Apple, Dell, HP, and IBM Lenovo. Desktop Computers Buying Guide

Why Go for Desktops?

Desktops have not lost their popularity even though there are a lot of technological advancements upgrading the PC world every now and then. So, what is a desktop PC? A desktop computer is a personal computer that is designed to lie flat on the desk, while the towers stand upright. Take a look at the key factors and advantages that give desktops an edge over laptops and tablet PCs, in our desktops buying guide.

  • - Price: When it comes to the price factor, desktops tend to be cheaper than laptops or tablet PCs. Also, you can expect more value in desktops for the money you have invested, which is not the case in laptops. The repair and replacement costs of desktops are considerably less when compared to laptops. Laptop parts are quite expensive as they have to be specially manufactured to laptop specifications.

  • - Repair and Upgrades: In desktops, you can easily upgrade almost every part to a newer version. As a laptop is relatively smaller, upgrading the parts is quite tough. It is because a laptop’s motherboard needs enough security inside the case and thus, gives you only limited access to change parts. Moreover, the internal parts are expensive as mentioned earlier. When a problem is encountered, it is easy to fix the faulty parts in a desktop PC. In case you use a laptop, you may be entitled to a replacement; else you will have to repair it at high costs.

  • - Ports: Desktops give you enough freedom to add audio and video cards with additional ports and advanced processors. Nowadays, laptops or tablet PCs come with enhanced connectivity and USB ports but nothing beats the capacity of a desktop PC. Desktops also allow you to add on extra USB ports and hardware. However, the new additions should be compatible with the motherboard of the desktops.

  • - Accessories: The desktop’s accessories such as monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse are included in the price of the computer. Hence, you need not invest money for the accessories separately. Desktops don’t require accessories like portable charging cords and batteries like laptops. Also, you don’t have to buy accessories like external hard drives and external disc drives, which are required for upgrading laptops.

  • - Comfort: While laptops may be the current rage, it is a known fact that those who are accustomed to working on a desktop hardly prefer the cramped up keypad and trackball of a laptop.

Processors (CPUs)

The processor or CPU (Central Processing Unit), known as the heart of the computer, is the primary component of a desktop PC. You will have to look into factors such as the interface, brand, and speed before getting one. Intel, AMD, and Cyrix are the prominent trusted brands available for you to choose from. Also, make sure the processor has a heat sink or is compatible with a heat sink. This part is responsible for cooling the processor and doubling its efficiency. Processors can be classified into the following types.

  • Budget processors:

  • If you are budget conscious, then you can pick these processors that may or may not be manufactured anymore. Although some of these desktop processors have been discontinued, they could act as functional and cheap alternatives. There are two types, namely, discontinued high-end processors and new low-end budget processors. The former would be the best bet if you expect decent functionality for the money you have invested. In comparison to the newer budget processors, they perform computing tasks better in spite of a lower clock speed. Some examples of budget processors are the AMD Phenom II X4 810, Intel Core i3-2100 and Higher, Intel Core i3-530 and Higher, and Intel Pentium G6950.

  • Middle Processors:

  • These desktop processors are ideal for those who value functionality more than the operating speed. Their price to performance ratio prevails over their lifespan. For this reason, people go for middle processors instead of high-end processors. A few examples of middle processors include the AMD Phenom II X6 1045T and Higher, Intel Core i5-750 and Higher, Intel Core i7-860 and Higher, and Intel Core i7-920 and Higher.

  • Top of the Line Processors:

  • If you wish to settle for nothing but “The Best”, then you should go for top of the line processors. They’ll make the perfect companion for your advanced and high performing desktop PC. Although these desktop processors are expensive, they are well worth the money you invest. These recently developed processors promise you amazing processing power, speed, and performance when compared to their counterparts from other categories. Some popular picks include the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T and 1100T Black Edition, Intel Core i7-975 Extreme, and Intel Core i7-980X Extreme.

A word of caution - you have to watch out for outdated processors when buying a desktop PC. These desktop processors are no longer produced by manufacturers. However, they are sold in budget systems, assembled PCs, or old, refurbished systems. Installing these desktop processors on recent machines might hinder the speed of running applications. Sometimes, they do not run some of the software available in the market today. So, it is better to avoid these processors altogether. They could be used for performing very basic functions like word processing and general web browsing. But they are really not worth investing in if you’re buying yourself a desktop. Some outdated processors include the AMD Athlon XP, AMD Athlon X2, AMD Sempron LE, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core 2 Quad, Intel Celeron, Intel Pentium 4, and Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2000 Series.

Memory and Hard Drive Explained

Memory

Another aspect that needs to be thoroughly reviewed before buying desktops is the desktop memory. When it comes to data storage of a desktop PC, what matters the most is the type of memory. The type, as such, would largely influence your system in not just matters of capacity and size, but also in terms of data recovery. The desktop PC’s memory is classified into two main types, namely the primary and secondary. The primary memory, which is directly accessible, is again classified into ROM and Read/Write memories. At present, two memory types are widely used. They include DDR2 and DDR3, which come under the Read/Write memory. Out of these two types, the most preferred memory is DDR3. It is a high-performing solution that has the ability to transfer data at twice the rate in comparison to DDR2. However, DDR2 is still used in some budget oriented desktops. Note that only one type of memory can be used in desktops.

Amount of memory also matters when you have superior performance in mind. It is good to choose a 1 GB RAM that offers you enough space for storing data in your desktop PC. If you increase the memory capacity, then the speed is increased consequently. It is because the desktop memory capacity is directly proportional to speed. If you are planning to expand the desktop memory, then you need to consider how much memory a desktop PC can actually support.

Hard Drive

This vital part of desktops has two matters to consider; one is size and the other is speed. Also, you need to be sure of what type of tasks your computer will be performing. On this basis, you’ll be choosing your computer’s hard drive. Nowadays, hard drives come with ample space but still, better safe than sorry! Know how much space is required for various functions.

  1. - Word Processing: 250GB and Higher, 7200rpm

  2. - Web Surfing: 320GB and Higher, 7200rpm

  3. - Digital Video: 1.5TB and Higher, 7200 rpm

  4. - Gaming: 500GB and Higher, 7200 rpm

  5. - Graphics Editing: 1TB and Higher, 7200 rpm

  6. - Digital Music: 750GB and Higher, 7200 rpm

It is recommended that a desktop PC has a hardware capacity of 250 GB or more. When the capacity of the hard drive is increased, the speed and performance increases. Hence, go for a hard drive that has higher capacity. Also, make sure that the minimum speed is 7200 rpm at least.

Tips to Buy Desktops

Buying desktops may seem to be a simple task, but the problem arises when there are so many kinds to choose from! And of course, choosing the right one suited to your computing needs. Knowing just the CPU’s speed and hard drive capacity is not enough. Read these useful tips in our desktops buying guide and make your purchase worth every penny!

  • - Sometimes, desktops tend to develop problems in the first year of their purchase itself. So, get to know what warranty and technical support a manufacturer offers you at the time of purchase. Compare such information with other brands, so that you can choose one that assures you of reliable customer service when required. Check how many years of warranty are provided by the manufacturer at the time of purchase.

  • - The reason why most people look for desktops that have connectivity in front is because, they won’t have to fumble around at the back to connect their multiple peripherals. If you want this feature, then search for desktops that come with up-front FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, audio and video connectors, and USB 2.0 ports.

  • - At the time of purchasing a desktop PC, you will be offered an operating system, an office software suite, and an antivirus package. It is entirely up to you whether you buy from them or separately opt for a software bundle, which may sound more economical to you.

  • - It is better to go by the quality of a desktop PC and not by the price. Sometimes, manufacturers might trick you to purchase low-performing desktops for a cheap rate. So, it is always good to go for performance and quality, rather than yielding to the temptation of a low-priced desktop PC, which might ultimately let you down!

  • - Ensure that you check the LCD monitor’s interface. Some interface connectors include the well-known VGA and the superior DVI. So if you’re opting for an assembled version, check if the interface works with the system you wish to get.

  • - Keyboards play a major role when you own a desktop. In recent times, most manufacturers design their keyboards with additional buttons to quickly launch apps. These keyboards are a great idea if you indulge in computer gaming, frequent web surfing, and need instant access provided within seconds! However, as they cost more than a standard keyboard, you don’t have to buy them just because they are the latest development in the market.
