Scanners

A scanner is an input device connected to a computer or computer network that converts documents, photographs, drawings, film and other hard copy items to electronic files. Some models include document feeders, letting the user more easily scan multiple pages or items. Many models feature a hinged cover over a clear glass plate and an optical scanning device. Portable models are much smaller, with fewer features, resembling a pair of rollers that the document passes through. The quality of scanned documents and images is dependant on the resolution of the scan and bit-depth of the device. For example, a 48-bit scanner has twice the scanning resolution of a 24-bit model. Scanning software and drivers are included with most models. Scanned photographs, graphics and document can also be imported into image-editing software. Specialized scanners such as 35mm film scanners, barcode scanners, and business card scanners are included in this category. We have various makes and models here from manufacturers such as Canon, Kodak, HP and Xerox. With Kelkoo, you can rest assured that you’ll be getting a quality scanner at the lowest price. ... Scanners Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

Welcome to our buying guide for scanners. Scanners are optical devices that help you convert your documents, photos, and other objects into digitized images. Here, you’ll get plenty of ideas and tips on what types of scanners to buy that will suit your requirements the best. Our huge list of online retailers will help you compare and purchase scanners at the best possible price on the market.

Capture Digitized Images of Real Objects!

Scanners are devices that help convert your physical copies of photos and documents into digital copies, and are simple to use, too. The clarity of the scanned image is decided by the resolution range of the scanner, and you can choose the desired resolution based on the quality you require – but you need to be aware that the better the standard of your scanned files, the higher the file size as well. This means that you need to be careful in your selection of image quality so you can keep your scanned files in manageable sizes. You can either go for a lower pixel count or save the image in a file compression format like JPEG or GIF which occupies lesser space compared to formats like TIFF or PNG.

Almost all scanners are inbuilt with either CIS (Contact Image Sensor) or a CCD (Charged Couple Device) sensor that helps in scanning an image. The analog/digital convertor inside a scanner helps in translating analog signals generated by the sensors into digital signals, resultantly digitizing your scanned copy. You can connect the scanner to your PC through parallel ports, GPIB (General Purpose Interface Bus), SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), or USB (Universal Serial Bus)Wiree Interface Bus), SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), USB (Universal Serial Bus) or FireWire. Most of our general purpose desktop scanners use USB interfaces that are simpler and faster in transfer data.

There are many types of scanners available on the market, and desktop scanners, such as the NeatReceipts Desktop Scanner, efficiently help scan documents, pictures, and even real objects. Portable scanners, such as the HP Scanjet 1000 Sheetfed Scanner, can be carried anywhere for instant scanning purposes –wherever you might be. Apart from these popular models, there are also more expensive scanners that are larger and can be used for exceptional scanning results at a faster rate. These products are mainly intended for professional use.

Flatbed, Photo and Sheet-Fed Scanners

Flatbed scanners: Flatbed scanners occupy very little space and serve most of your domestic and professional scanning purposes efficiently. The image to be scanned is placed on the glass pane and the flip-up cover is pressed over it. The scanning head and sensors then move underneath with a light source, scanning the object. CIS or CCD sensors are associated with this type of scanner. Flatbed scanners are also equipped with Transparency Adapters (TA,) which allows scanning of 35 mm slides, x-ray sheets, and other transparent materials, and are quite versatile because they scan flat images, transparent materials, and even small three-dimensional objects. Thanks to this, they are not only picture scanners, but object scanners, too. Flatbed scanners are available with SCSI (Small Computer System Interface), parallel ports and USB ports for connectivity to your PC or Mac. An example of this type of scanner is the Canon CanoScan 9000F.

Photo scanners: If you are looking for a scanner to be used exclusively for scanning printed images, then photo scanners are the best choice. Not all scanners provide high resolution and color accuracy, but that is the hallmark of photo scanners. Digitizing film negatives and slides is possible with these scanners as they are specially designed for the job. Most photo scanners have built-in software that helps you improve the appearance of old photographs. Epson has a range of photo scanners including the Epson Perfection V700 Photo Flatbed Scanner.

Sheetfed scanners: As the name suggests, the sheet or the image to be scanned is fed into the scanner via a horizontal or vertical slot. Only documents can be scanned using these scanners, and unless an automatic document feeder is provided, you’ll have to manually feed a single sheet at a time. Be aware that sheet fed scanners can only be used as picture scanners and not as object scanners, nor is it possible to digitize the pages of a book. This type is best for domestic and office use if only document and image scanning is the norm. If you think that this could be the scanner for you, have a look at the Fujitsu FI-6130 Sheetfed Scanner.

Pen, Mobile, and Handheld Scanners

These scanners are very small in size and you can easily carry them from place to place. Some portable scanners are small enough to be put in your pocket.

Pen scanners can scan text line by line, and although they are not good enough for scanning images as their resolution is low, they can be ideal for students, researchers and even spies.

Mobile scanners are also available on the market and serve as portable sheet-fed scanners. They can be carried along easily and may come in handy to scan business cards, ID cards, receipts, checks, color photos, documents in A4 and so on. Mobile scanners work with an AC adapter, and can prove helpful for office staff, students, journalists, and insurance agents in their routine tasks.

Finally, handheld scanners are small, manual scanning devices that are moved over objects or documents to be scanned. However, a slight shake of the hand may result in image distortion. Barcode scanners are a good example of handheld scanners and are widely used in stores and other places for reading printed barcodes.

For Massive Use: Drum Scanners

Drum scanners get their name from the acrylic cylinders in them. Originals to be scanned are placed on the cylindrical glass pane and the cylinder rotates at a high speed while the image is scanned by the sensors. Drum scanners were the first ones to be invented, and they are still quite effective because their scanning quality is the best because they use PMT (Photo Multiplier Tube) instead of CCD or CIS. The image is rotated at a high speed continually against the PMT sensors to capture the true picture. They are quite huge and expensive compared to other scanners, but their capacity is higher, too.
