Servers

It doesn’t matter whether you use your computer is for personal, professional, gaming or for keeping sensitive data secure, you will need servers. There are many different types of servers, all designed to store and keep safe data and programs so they can be accessed by everyone (such as those used to host a website,) or by a few people with authorized access to sensitive data such as financial information or medical records. You may even want a server so that you can store data in a remote location. If you are not sure exactly what it is that your computer needs, then have a look at the servers that are available from our trusted online retailers, such as CTi, PC Nation, ServerNexus.com, CyberTronPC.com and TechVatic. Read our product descriptions and the reviews so you know exactly what to expect from each product, and then simply look for the best price possible. ... View more - View less

Server Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

How a server works is a mystery to many of us. Because of this, it’s essential to clear any doubts about what a server is in the first place. Servers are a series of computers that link other computers or electronic devices together, and provide information and resources through the network it creates. A server is dedicated to running one or more services to assist programs that could be running on other computers on the same network. This could include a database server, file server, mail server or print server manufactured by the biggest brands in technology such as Apple, Dell and Cisco.

The Basics

Servers provide all requisite services across a network. This could be a private network of a large organization, or a network of public users on the Internet. A computer server can also be defined as a software program which enables the sharing of computing resources on any computer network. The resources may be application programs or hardware devices that need to be shared with many client computers on a network.

A server program needs to be hosted on a computer with high processing speed and a lot of working memory as it needs to handle multiple requests from many client computers on a network.  So servers physically look like any other computer, but their hardware configuration is specifically optimized to make them most appropriate for their role. The software is also extremely sophisticated. For instance, servers would require special operating systems so that they are able to handle various tasks in large volumes. Network servers have better processing ability, higher storage capacity and enhanced memory capabilities to be able to handle other computers on the network. The hardware or software that drives the servers is called a server platform.

Advantages

Servers or computer networks have some major advantages. They allow file sharing and remote file access saving you the hassle of copying a file from one device to another using pen drives or other such type of storage devices. In addition, they allow multiple users to access and update data. Servers also enable resource sharing. Increased storage capacity is another advantage of servers. Computer networks are also cost efficient.

The role of the servers in networks is very important. The increase in the usage of Internet in homes and offices along with the increase in corporate computer networks has resulted in the expansion of servers. When a server goes down, it can halt the interconnectivity of all computers in its network. Server computer prices are generally higher than the prices of personal computers, due to the advanced hardware and software installed in them.

Types of Servers

Servers are categorized according to the tasks they handle for a network. Some of common servers are explained below:

Print servers are used to manage one or more printers and provide printing services to their clients on an interconnected network of computer systems, with popular brands including HP and Lenovo. Meanwhile, network servers manage traffic and process requests and deliver data to their clients. File servers are backup servers used to store files on the network, and allow all users with authorized access to store files on shared disk access.

FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol, and these servers are one of the oldest Internet services that continue to be a mainstay of Internet transfers. FTP servers allow users to move one or more files securely between computers providing file security, organization, as well as transfer control.

Meanwhile, application servers from manufacturers such as IBM and Supermicro act as an interface between database servers and the end user. They are often called middleware because of their ability to establish a connection between two separate applications.

Telnet servers, news servers, proxy servers, web servers, and audio/video servers are some other servers used commonly. The type of system you choose for a server depends on plenty of things, and at the forefront of your mind should be the purpose of the system, the amount of data to be stored and retrieved, the number of users and clients.

What to Look For

Shopping for computer servers is a big deal. If you do not select the appropriate computer hardware and software configurations for the server, it will not be able to address your needs properly. This may result in reduced productivity and a loss of money. So make sure you buy the latest computer hardware configurations and look for the manufacturer’s warranty terms and conditions. The case or rack of the server should have provisions for expandability and accessibility of the computer hardware inside.

The available amount of disk space on the server and the maximum capacity to which it can be expanded are very important factors. The majority of servers today use either SATA or SCSI hard disk drives. Backing up is an important consideration for servers in the event of a power outage and so the availability, speed, and capacity any backup solutions you consider is a priority. It is also important to have a minimum of 512 MB of memory to begin with, and you need to ensure that this can be upgraded in the future when the need arises.

Network cards are another important consideration, as they enable data transfer, file and folder sharing, Internet connectivity, and printer services. It is also important that the operating system is compatible with other software. In the case of large networks or servers, look at the available number of power outlets as well as the capacity of each of the outlet. When selecting computer processors for a network server, check the capacity and speed of the processor and the number of processors the server computer can support.

In addition, you need to consider the servicing provided by the manufacturer. If the server computer becomes unusable, will the manufacturing company offer on-site service? How long will it take to service the computer hardware? Also, check for the warranty and the time period of the warranty, which is sometimes applicable for both hardware and software.

We hope that this server buying guide has been of help to you. You can easily find plenty of brands and models of servers at popular online retailers listed on our website. Compare prices and make a great purchase at the lowest market rates.
