Hard Drives

Hard drives, which are sometimes referred to as a hard disk drives, are a crucial part of any computer. It is here where all files and programs are stored, so if anything happens to your hard drive that causes damage, the result will be the catastrophic loss of everything on your computer. There are a number of ways that hard drives can become vulnerable. Laptops are more at risk than desktops because people tend to handle them far more roughly than they should. Because of this, it makes sense to buy an external hard drive to back up all your precious files, but if you have left it too late, you may need to buy a brand-new hard drive to get your computer back up and running. Hard Drives Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

Hard drives used in computers are popularly called disk drives, hard disks, or hard disk drives. As you can imagine, quite a large amount of data is stored in the hard drive of your computer, and they are specially designed to suit the needs of the average computer user. Hard drives are professionally known as non-volatile storage drives because they don’t require power supply to retain stored data. Data remains safe on the memory of the hardware even after the computer is turned off. Read through our buying guide to get a general idea on hard drives and their features.

What Makes Buying a Good Hard Drive so Important?

Buying a hard drive may seem tough, unless you understand its features clearly. It’s worthwhile taking the time to know about the various terms and jargon used, as well as ways of measuring performance, before you get into the selection process. This knowledge, when combined with awareness of your system requirements, will ensure that your hard drive purchase is an informed and long-lasting one.

Among various computer parts, hard drives are essential internal storage centers for your system. Your daily computer activities will be saved on these hardware and once installed in your system can be partitioned into many smaller drives for specific purposes. Apart from storing your work, hard drives also help in a plethora of other ways. For example, hard disk drives in computers work as a storehouse for all your multimedia files, and allow you to install various multimedia applications for saving audio and video files, listening to music and watching movies.

If you’re not happy with your hard drive’s performance, buying a new one means that you won’t have to get a brand-new PC. You could also consider upgrading your existing hard drive, which will also enhance the system’s functionality.

Decide on the Type of Interface

Internal hard drives are named after their interface connectivity. The five main types of hard drive connections are explained below. The interface type determines how data is transmitted to and from your computer’s processor.

Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment, or PATA hard drives, are also called Enhanced Integrated Drive Electronics (EIDE) or Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE) drives. They support data transfer rates of up to 133 MB a second, and the hard drive interface uses a large four-pin cable for their power supply. These drives are less expensive and are the most popularly used interface type on the market today.

SATA hard drives are also used widely, and these hard drives are very slender. They rely on thin SATA cables replacing the large four-pin power cables, and can support high speed data transfers of up to 300 MB a second – more than double the capacity of a PATA hard drive. They are energy-efficient, too as they consume a lot less power.

Moving on, we also have SCSI hard drives, a hard drive interface with a higher spin rate. Whereas SATA and IDE hard drives usually spin at 7200 RPM (revolutions per minute), SCSI hard drives spin at 10000 to 15000 RPM, which is very high when compared to other hard drives you can buy. Consider the RPM rate while purchasing your hard drive, as this will make accessing your files and transferring them a lot quicker. Supporting transfer rates of 640 MB a second, they use a normal four-pin power cable for charging.

The latest technology employed among hard drives is SSD, which stands for Solid State Drive. They have no moving parts, and work differently when compared to more conventional offerings. Although they are more expensive, you can expect enhanced features and the same connectivity as SATA and IDE hard drives for transferring data.

Last but not least, external hard drives do not form a part of the CPU, and connect via USB, fire wire, or parallel ports. They can be used to back up internal hard drive’s data in the event of corruption. You can transfer large amount of data from your computer’s hard drives and save on the external hard disk, and this also allows you to free up memory considerably.

After selecting the connectivity type you prefer for your hard drive, just check if your computer can support the connectivity type that you are to purchase.

Factors to Consider

Given below are few factors to consider while choosing your hard drive.

Space: Choose a hard drive that can store up to 320 GB or more. Initially, you will not need this large amount of space, but when you’ve installed various software and multimedia applications, it will certainly come in handy. Always check that you have some free space on your hard drive, as it will help your system function faster.

Speed: While looking for your hard disk drive, check for its data transfer rate. Low transfer rate hard drives will slow down the computer’s performance while transferring larger files. The higher the RPM rate, the faster your computer’s performance will be.

Sturdiness: You should also see if your hard drive is durable. Few external and internal hard disks seem fragile to handle, but if they are, look for alternative models as they may break easily.

Warranty period: When you buy a hard drive, it is always essential to look for the warranty period. The warranty period ensures your hard drive’s safety. While using hard drives, utilize S.M.A.R.T. technology which intimates you regarding your hard disk’s status. Any problem with your hard disk, the technology informs you about the approaching threat beforehand. You can therefore backup important data and avoid unnecessary data loss.

Brands: There are dozens of manufacturers featured on Kelkoo that offer both external and internal hard disk drives. Among them, a few brands have retained their name in the market for producing efficient hard drives over a long period. Those popular brands include Western Digital, Maxtor, Seagate, Fantom, HP, Samsung, and Hitachi.

By browsing through our website and discovering various online merchants, you will be able to assess an array of models, compare features and specifications, and then select a hard drive that matches your needs.
