Introduction

Home theater is all about the setup that recreates the magic of a movie theater in your home. When it comes to buying a home theater setup, however, there is so much to choose from and so many labels for different features that it can become a stressful and confusing time. All-in-one System or Separate Components?

There are two ways of putting achieving a home theater system – you can buy an all-in-one system that is ready to set up and enjoy, or you can construct it yourself from a multitude of different home entertainment components.

All-in-one home theater systems are audio systems which include all of the elements needed and are sometimes referred to as home-theater-in-a-box systems (HTiB.) The basic components of HTiB systems include a multi channel Dolby Digital receiver, a CD/DVD player, a set of speakers, a subwoofer, AV receivers, and amplifiers. They are compact, can be inexpensive, and can be installed without too much hassle. If you don’t want your home theater system to occupy a lot of space, or you are keeping an eye on your budget, then HTiB systems are a good choice. Philips and Yamaha have a range of HTiB systems for you to choose from if you feel this is the home theater set up for you.

The trouble with an HTiB, however, is that often the sound quality isn’t as good as what you good get from a system that you put together yourself (although, naturally, that will depend on the quality of the individual components that you would buy). Connectivity options depend upon the model and specifications set by the manufacturer, and not all HTiB models provide options to connect various devices such as gaming consoles and satellite TV input. Moreover, you cannot upgrade components of your all-in-one home theater system if you wish to expand your system.

The alternative to a HTiB is to buy the components of your home theater system separately so that you get all the features that you require. You can take into consideration your personal needs and style requirement when choosing the individual components, and upgrade them as and when necessary.

Choose the Right Size and Type of Speakers

Speakers are one of the most important components of a home theater system. Speaker packages offer a uniform sound track, so that you don’t hear different sounds from each speaker. Television sets and video projectors are also components involved in building complete home theater systems. You can choose from a wide selection of plasma TVs, LCD TVs, LED TVs, rear projection TVs, and video projectors for the display. For a clear picture with excellent color capabilities, high definition plasma televisions are the way to go. Their wide screens offer greater viewing angles and rich colors, but plasma screens generate a lot of heat and consume more energy.

High definition LCD televisions are capable of displaying clearer pictures and are great for DVD playback and gaming. You can choose televisions with LED display screens, which are similar to LCDs but offer greater viewing angles and better color capabilities.

Rear projection TVs are suitable if you like to have the advantage of extremely large screens. Though they possess high definition capabilities, their performance in terms of picture quality is less, especially in bright room settings.

Video projectors are an excellent option if you want the experience of real cinema within the confines of your home. They are ideal for a large room. You have to just position the projector in such a way that it can cast the images on a large screen.

To enjoy true movie theater effect in your home, you need to buy the right home theater system for you, and then install it where you can take full advantage of what it has to offer. While doing this, bear in mind some of the factors that affect the quality of your home theater system.

Size of the room and its capacity to accommodate all speakers and furniture affects the performance of home theater systems. For example, if you have decided on a TV with a wide screen, you should ensure that the room where you plan to install it is large enough to handle it.
