Plasma TVs Buying Guide

Introduction

Welcome to our buying guide for plasma TVs. We are here to help you make a buying decision by taking you through the finer aspects of plasma TVs so that you can make a confident and informed buying decision.  You will find a wide variety of brands here on Kelkoo.com, such as Panasonic, LG, Pioneer, and Samsung.

For clarity and brightness of visuals, the market offers you a wide selection of televisions, ranging from LCD TVs, LED TVs to plasma TVs. In this plasma TV buying guide, we will tell you about various factors you should be aware of when purchasing a plasma TV for your home entertainment.

Welcome to the new world of Plasma TVs

Plasma TVs are high-definition televisions, which were the first to supersede CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) technology. CRT screens were in use for many years, but plasma TVs are now here to offer a viable option to viewers. Generally, there is confusion between the two competing technologies, plasma and LCD, as both have similar features such as bright and clear images. However, the difference between the two lies in their use of plasma cells and liquid crystals, respectively, to display images.

Plasma TVs, such as a Samsung PN64D8000, or an LG 50PT350, fall within the category of flatscreen televisions. The screen of plasma TVs is made of thousands of tiny cells filled with gases, such as neon or xenon. Upon exposure to an electric field, these gases emit light. These tiny cells are called the picture elements, abbreviated as ‘pixel’. Each pixel has red, green, and blue colors, which can produce all the spectrum colors by controlling the level of color in each pixel. Therefore, plasma TVs have better picture quality and contrast ratio compared to LCD display. They are best suited for night time viewing, and, unlike a CRT display, plasma TVs don’t bring scan lines to the picture.

Plasma TVs used to get a bad rap in comparison to their LCD counterparts based on like-for-like screen life, brightness, and total weight of the television. Today’s version of plasma TVs have definitely upped their game and give you better value for money if you’re looking for a larger screen TV with a wider viewing angle. Smaller plasma TVs can be wall-mounted and use only slightly more energy than LCD’s and tend to be about 10-15% cheaper, too!

Features that Sell

Brightness: The quality of brightness is good in plasma TVs, which LCDs can’t quite match. The screen has a transistor within it which illuminates every pixel on the screen, equally. This improves the picture quality. Blacks are generally deeper in plasma televisions, and the color capacity is great.

Flatscreen: Standard CRT televisions have a convex screen. This may slightly distort the image at the edges, but the screen of a plasma TV is flat, so you can say goodbye to distortion and curved images.

Speakers: Most plasma TVs come with built-in speakers. You may also connect an amplifier or surround sound.

Plasma and scan lines: In CRT display, the electron beam is moved across the screen for scanning the image. This can leave behind annoying visible scan lines. But with plasma TVs, that won’t happen. Plasma TVs do not rely on electron beam, instead they have transistor electrodes for every pixel and these transistors keep scan lines away.

Available Sizes and Display Quality

Of course, the size of plasma TVs is important for most buyers, but do give a thought to the size of your room. Screen size measurements are stated in inches and are measured on the diagonal from corner to corner. Viewing distance is also a matter for consideration. The distance should be 6 to 10 feet for a screen size of more than 37 inches, 10 to 14 feet for 42 inch, and 12 to 16 feet for a 50 inch model. A 60 inch plasma TV requires a viewing distance of more than 15 feet because any closer may make images look slightly blurred.

Among the competing television technologies, plasma is in the lead when it comes to size with the largest screens still being affordable and great viewing angles of up to 160 degrees possible. Plasma TVs have a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9, the ratio that shows the relationship between the screen width and height, and is the proper aspect ratio for a HDTV.

Resolution describes the accuracy of a television in replicating an image. It also tells how much detail the screen can offer. Resolution represents the number of picture elements (pixels) the screen has, vertically and horizontally (a measure that has two components, width and height). On multiplying the two numbers we obtain the total number of pixels that the TV has.

Plasma TVs come in various resolutions ranging from as low as 1024 x 768 to as high as 1920 x 1080. They fall primarily under two categories, 720p and 1080p resolution, with 1080p being the best because it gives the highest clarity. It can then be called high definition, as it provides high picture quality. But, in most cases, the resolution is represented as a single number and a letter because in many televisions, the horizontal resolution varies. The number denotes the vertical resolution and the letter denotes the progressive scan (p) or the interlaced scan (i).

A higher resolution means more detail. However, it is recommended to go for overall picture quality over resolution in plasma TVs. When you need to choose between quality and resolution, it is wise to opt for quality. As 46 inch and larger plasma TVs are full HD resolution, it is not a problem if the resolution is not high.

Display and Power Needs

Before spending on a plasma TV, you should decide a place in your living room, which will give you the best viewing experience. The maximum thickness of most plasma TVs is not more than 3 inches, which makes them wall mountable. The best way to display your plasma TV is to mount it on the wall or hang it from the ceiling. Both these positions require the use of accessories known as mounts. There are a number of these on the market from a variety of suppliers such as Chief and Sanus. Something else to consider is the positioning of your plasma TV – ideally, the center of the screen should be at your eye level.

Power consumption depends on the type of technology used and the screen size. In plasma technology, images are created by lighting each pixel. Plasma TVs can outperform LCD TVs when more black and white colors are seen on the screen but the result is the consumption of more power. Nowadays, manufacturers of plasma TVs are striving to reduce their energy consumption, which can be achieved by controlling the contrast and backlight.as can controlling other power settings. That said this involves the loss of picture quality.

Hopefully, you are now a little more knowledgeable about plasma TVs, and are in a better position to choose the one that’s best for you. Have a look at what out online merchants have to offer and see who can give you the best price. Before long, you could be viewing your favorite shows and movies in a whole new way.
