Being smaller than a standard dishwasher obviously means that you won’t be able to load a compact appliance with as many dishes in one go, but it doesn’t mean that they compromise on skill or technique. They are available in several models, which include slim, portable, and countertop.

Features

There are some basic features that apply to all kinds of dishwashers, and, as with many things, the more you spend, the more features you get. While in some instances that may be a good thing, there are some times when a particular feature may not be worth the extra buck, so it’s a good idea to be aware of what exactly you need.

For example, adjustable racks can be adjusted up or down so you can accommodate larger than usual dishes or pans when the need arises, a feature that’s regularly seen in appliances manufactured by Maytag.

If you have a tendency to leave dirty pots and pans overnight that make cleaning dried-on eggs and last night’s casserole dish a challenge, then you may need this feature. A door safety lock also can be useful if you have children at home. It prevents curious minds from opening the dishwasher when it is in operation, which could prevent some expensive flooding, and a nasty burn from hot steam and water.

Dishwashers can also come with powerful filters in order to stop any food debris clogging up your drainage pipes, and these components sometimes need to be cleaned from time to time unless you choose a dishwasher that has a self-cleaning filter and has a grinder to disintegrate the waste and send it out to the drain. Other Features to Look For

Noise: We suggest you opt for a low-noise dishwasher if your kitchen is very close to the living room, though these appliances tend to be more expensive because they have good insulation. For a dishwasher that is going to be as unobtrusive as possible the decibel setting should be around 47 to 57 decibels.

Temperature range: With a wider temperature range, you have the option to choose a lower heat setting. This means that you can select the right temperature depending on how much washing your dishes need – and, of course, if you can get away with a lower temperature you can conserve electricity.

Hard water compatibility: if you have a hard water supply, you must look for this feature. It’s worthwhile considering there are estimates that 75% of homes in the US have hard water, which reduces the action of detergent and results in the formation of a white film inside the machine and on dishes that could compromise the efficiency of the appliance. Some dishwashers have softening chambers, into which you can add some water softening agents to treat hard water.

Make a Purchase You Won’t Regret!

One of the things to consider is the capacity of the dishwasher, which is classified in terms of place settings. There are models ranging from two-place settings to 17-place settings and it is important to get this right. If you get a dishwasher that is too small you will either end up washing the excess dishes by hand (which can make getting a dishwasher pointless in the first place,) or running more cycles, which will be expensive. Meanwhile, if you get a dishwasher that is too big, you might run it at half full, which is not energy efficient.
