Clothes Dryers Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

Welcome to our buying guide for clothes dryers. Here, you’ll be able to discover a wide range of clothes dryers, and learn about the different features that they have. What’s more, we’re going help you to find manufacturers that produce the clothes dryer which will fit perfectly into your home and make your life easier.

Clothes dryers are popular appliances because they offer an alternative to the traditional line-drying method, and here’s the best part: it never matters what the weather is! They work by tumbling the wet clothes in a rotating drum, and warm air is created by a gas or an electric-powered heater. By means of a fan, the warm air is circulated around the drum to evaporate the moisture from the load. The drum is rotated and tumbled by an induction motor, and the hot air absorbs the moisture and vaporizes it, which passes out of the clothes dryer either through an exhaust vent if you buy a vented dryer; or to the water reservoir if you choose a condenser dryer.

Vented or Condenser Clothes Dryers?

To help you make the best choice we are going to look at both vented and condenser clothes dryers.

Vented dryers: In this type of clothes dryer, hot, moist air is pumped out through a venting pipe connected to the back of the dryer, which needs to have access outside, either through an open window, or through a specially-made hole in the wall that the vent fits into. A good example of a vented clothes dryer is the Speed Queen ADE41.

Condenser dryers: These clothes dryers are the best solution if you don’t have the necessary facilities to vent the hot air out, for example if you are living in an apartment, small building, or you have limited space. Bosch and LG are two manufacturers that have a wide selection of condenser clothes dryers to choose from.

Instead of expelling hot air out of the condenser clothes dryer, the air is drawn inside, heated, and used repeatedly to remove the moisture from clothes. This method is based on the HVAC principle (Heating, Venting, and Air Conditioning,) and when the air vaporizes, it is diverted to a container where it condenses back into water. The collected water in the clothes dryer can either be recycled or drained out via a drain pipe and can operate at a lower temperature, which is good for your clothes.

The downside to having a condenser clothes dryer is that they tend to have longer operating cycles, and so use more energy overall compared to a vented clothes dryer. On the other hand, with a condenser model, you won’t have to endure the inconvenience of installing a vent into the wall.

Choose Between Gas and Electric Clothes Dryers

When you are deciding which clothes dryer to choose, another aspect to consider is which energy you will use: gas or electricity.

Electric clothes dryers: These use coils to heat the air for efficient drying, and s operate at 240 V. So, all you need to do is connect the dryer to a 240 V power outlet in your laundry room. This type of clothes dryer is definitely the more popular and you will find many manufacturers produce these appliances, such as Maytag and Samsung. The reason for the popularity is that they are cheaper than gas models and are easy to install – however, you should remember that the running costs for this clothes dryer will be higher in the long-term.

Gas clothes dryers: If you’re interested by the idea of a gas-powered clothes dryer, have a look at the Asko TLS752 Gas Dryer. There is no difference in the operating process of electric and gas clothes dryers; the gas models use gas burners to heat the air inside them, though the drum still requires an electric power source to operate. Because they use gas, these clothes dryers need to be installed professionally. This may seem like another expense that you could do without, but remember that gas is a lot cheaper than electricity so you will save money on the running costs – and because they heat up so much more quickly, your drying times are reduced. Other manufacturers that produce gas clothes dryers that you may be interested in are Whirlpool and Electrolux.

Features That Add Value

The worth of any clothes dryer is decided by its features that make it a convenient, efficient and performance-oriented appliance, and here are just some of the best functions that add to the convenience of using a clothes dryer:

Moisture sensors: Traditional clothes dryers used a thermostat to judge the time required for drying clothes, but now they’ve been replaced by moisture sensors that measure the level of dampness in clothes and set the temperature accordingly. They prevent over drying and thereby are kinder to the fabric.

Extended tumble: If you don’t remove your load from the clothes dryer soon after the process is over, wrinkles may set in the clothes. The extended tumble feature keeps the machine tumbling even after the clothes are dry to prevent this.

Lint filter: This can determine the life of your clothes dryer because a clogged lint filter can reduce the efficiency of your appliance over time. Because of this, look for clothes dryers with large lint filters that warn you when it is time to clean them. A top-mounted lint filter allows for easy cleaning.

Auto-dry cycle: The cycle greatly affects your clothes and the energy the clothes dryer consumes. Timed dry-cycles run for the preset time, but if you get this wrong your clothes may come out shrunk, damaged or damp. The auto-dry feature automatically shuts off the machine when the clothes are dry. This prevents the likelihood of wrinkles to a large extent, and because this cycle is so effective, you will avoid energy wastage.

Drum rack: Clothes dryers that come with a rack inside the drum allow you a way to dry items that do not require tumbling such as pillows, running shoes, sweaters and small rugs.

Steam setting: Clothes dryers with this feature help remove odor and cause fewer wrinkles.

We hope that this clothes dryer buying guide has been able to help you come to a decision. If you would like more information have a look at our individual product descriptions and reviews.
