Cooktops

Cooktops have become hugely popular in the last several years and because of this rise in popularity, there’s a huge variety from which to choose. That can make shopping for cooktops a little intimidating and time-consuming, but there are some ways to make it easier and more rewarding. It helps to have your measurements handy and to know whether you want gas or electric and then narrow your search results to only the cooktops that meet those specs. Then you can narrow it down further to include solid surface, ceramic or glass surfaces. This will significantly cut down the amount of time you spend sifting through the search results. Cooktops are available in simple, budget-friendly models or in higher-end, more glamorous varieties. You can find cooktops that have built in grills or griddles, programmable timers, warmers and other neat features that are great for those who love to cook. Know what you have to have in a cooktop, and then compare cooktops based on features you’d like to have. You may be surprised at the great deals you can get on even the fanciest models. ... Cooktops Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

The basic kitchen appliance that every chef or homemaker requires is a cooktop. With the exhausting variety of cooktops available and differences in individual requirements, the simple task of choosing a cooktop can be challenging. You now have to consider certain factors before making a purchase, so this guide will talk about cooktops and simplify your task of choosing one within your budget.

Understanding the Various Types

Cooktops drop into a recessed opening in the available counter space and are preferable to traditional bulky cooking ranges if space is a constraint. Over time, this home appliance has evolved from the basic four burner- tops to stoves with up to seven or even nine burners. However, all these cooktops fall within three basic categories: gas, electric, and induction.

Gas cooktops are easier to operate and they also offer precise temperature control, which is the reason why chefs tend to prefer them. They need either an LPG or natural gas supply and are more energy efficient compared to electric cooktops. The burners produce both low and high heat output, which is adjustable. Sealed burners are also available in some cooktop models.

Electric cooktops have models with coils and ceramic glass. Ceramic glass cooktops are smooth, as the radiant heating elements are covered. Both models produce heat evenly. Smooth tops are more convenient than the traditional coiled one in terms of maintenance and appearance.

Induction cooktops produce heat by electromagnetism, so the cookware used should be made of iron or steel. Their surface is made of ceramic glass for a smooth finish. This type is comparatively safer than other types as it does not heat up the surface and also cools down quickly.

There are many brands to choose your cooktop from, such as Miele, Thermador, Whirlpool, Electrolux and GE.

Cooktop Features

In gas stove cooktops, always look for grates that are made of cast iron coated with porcelain or stainless steel, as these metal grates do not require delicate handling. Continuous grates allow you to switch burners by sliding the cookware across them.  Another essential feature is the size and ability of the burners. Some advanced cooktop models have dual burners as well as conventional high-heat output and low-heat output burners, and some models have sealed burners for easy maintenance.

Electric cooktops have hot surface warning lights, as the coils beneath the ceramic glass do not cool quickly, and so serve as a safety feature. There are also digital controls in an electric cooktop so it is easy to cook at a precise temperature. Some manufacturers even provide accessories such as grates and grills to customize your cooktop. Also, remember to look for an appropriate size that will fit in your kitchen space or countertop.

Cooktop Aesthetics: Appearance Matters!

Everyone likes their kitchen to appear stylish and well designed and cooktops come in a series of finishes so you can make sure it complements your décor. For instance, a cooktop with a stainless steel finish (such as the Maytag MGC8630 cooktop,) will go very well on a gray granite kitchen top – allowing your cooktop complement your surroundings in style as well as color.

Cooktops or stoves play an important role in adding to the aesthetics of your kitchen. You can opt for smooth tops that have concealed ceramic parts to harmonize with the countertop for an even finish. There are usually three colors to choose from with cooktops: black, white, and stainless steel, although some brands offer customized colors if you make a special order. You can even personalize the designs of grills and grates to suit your style. Unless you love housework, don’t opt for cooktops that are difficult to maintain or clean, which brings us to our next consideration: maintaining your cooktop.

Cooktop Maintenance: Keeping Your Cooktop Functional for Longer

Gas cooktops have a lower maintenance cost, as the parts are sturdy so you need not worry about periodic replacements over and over again. Stoves with sealed burners are easier to clean as food particles cannot settle under the burners, which would make cleaning them difficult and time consuming. Some cooktop models have dishwasher-friendly grates too, which really make life a lot easier, and you don’t need to worry when your spaghetti sauce spills. In the case of some electric cooktop models, the coils that heat up frequently may undergo damage, which means that they have to be replaced.

For smooth-top cooktops, cleaning is easy. You will need to buy a special detergent cleanser to clean the ceramic glass and there may be times when you may have to put in the occasional hard work to scratch out dried food from the surface, but the ceramic glass is not vulnerable to breaking. However, scratches may occur due to prolonged usage. Induction cooktops are the easiest to maintain compared to the other two as the spills do not dry out on a cool cooktop surface. Just a wipe with a damp cloth will be enough to clean the surface.

Gas cooktops are easy to operate and have the capacity to cook for a large number of people but it is likely that if you choose one of these you will pay more for it than a coiled electric cooktop, which is the least expensive. A ceramic glass finish cooktop will cost you the most, followed closely by an induction type.  However, such high-end cooktops with the advanced technology they have to offer will provide many additional safety features, which you may think is worth the high price tag.

A cooktop is something that has to last for many years, and to serve your family well, so there is no room for getting it wrong – which is why we try to make sure that you get all the information that you need to make the right choice. If you need more information, have a look at our detailed product guides, and then have a look at the independent reviews so you can see what other people think about the cooktop you are thinking of buying.
