I decided not too long ago that I was interested in purchasing a quality point and shoot so I wouldn't have to lug my DSLR gear around if I wanted to take photos while out and about. After some research (and finding a great pre-Xmas sale on Amazon) I pulled the trigger on the Canon S95.

Excellent still photos. Flexible manual controls. A great upgrade from my Canon SD 870 IS. Great quality video but is not well suited to fast action. Kids playing football might get a little jerky. Kids dancing 20 feet away, just fine.

I usually shoot with my 5DmkII and 40D, but I don't always wnat to have to haul that much gear around. This camera is great for those times and it fits in a pocket pretty well.

I have it for two weeks. So far I am very happy with it. Its picture quality is excellent for point and shoot camera. It is currently the best point and shoot camera for low light pictures with ISO 12,800.

Description
Canon PowerShot S95 Digital Camera

In today’s tech-centric world, it seems unusual to go anywhere in public without seeing someone, somewhere taking a photo. From family gatherings, to weddings and graduations, or just a night out on the town, a compact digital camera is a fantastic way to capture all of your treasured moments. Because of their popularity, digital cameras are topping wish lists as one of the most popular gifts to give almost anyone.

Introducing the Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera which is smack dab in the middle of the pricing bracket of Canon’s entire range of compact digital cameras. This digital camera isn’t the cheapest of the bunch yet it packs quite a range of impressive features that are sure to please even the toughest digital camera enthusiast while still charming the amateurs.

A Versatile Compact Digital Camera That Packs a Punch

The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera isn’t your standard point-and-shoot compact. In addition to shooting clear and precise photos at an impressive 10 megapixels, this digital camera also shoots 720p HD video with stereo sound and HDTV play back via the HDMI output. The S95 digital camera also sports a 3.8x optical zoom with stabilizer, a 28mm wide angle lens for shooting images in extreme close up, and an f/2.0 lens for shooting in low light conditions.

The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera also utilizes Canon’s own HS SYSTEM by joining the 10 megapixel CCD sensor with a DIGIC 4 Image Processor. This combination makes the S95 more sensitive than comparable digital cameras with the same amount of megapixels by allowing it to produce amazing photos with minimal noise or fuzziness. The PowerShot S95 also comes equipped with a new maximum setting of ISO 12,800 which makes this digital camera highly sensitive in low light situations.

Utilizing Canon's own Hybrid IS to make up for angular and shift camera shake during close-up shooting, blur and camera shake are noticeably decreased for the ultimate in sharpness and clarity. Gone are the days of having to check for quality on your videos and photos before you decided to keep it or delete it based on the clarity. This digital camera will deliver exceptional results in just about any situation.

Features That Exceed Expectations

If you’re looking for a bit more options and features with a compact digital camera, the Canon PowerShot S95 has a wide array of items that will definitely tip the scales in its favor over it’s similarly priced competitors. Most digital cameras just shoot in .jpg format - a computer-friendly type of picture format that’s universally accepted when importing to just about any program from word processing and photo editing software to direct uploading to Facebook and Twitter. The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera gives you the option to choose to shoot your photos in .jpg format or as a RAW image. With RAW images you get more accurate preservation of most of the information of the captured image, truer colors, lighting, and shadows. This allows the more skilled photographer better handling with post-processing via such popular programs like Adobe Photoshop.

In addition to shooting RAW images, the Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera also allows for manual shooting with exposure control. For action shots, you can shoot a maximum 0.7 shots per second to ensure you won’t miss a single moment You can also shoot at aspect ratios including 4:3,16:9, 3:2, 1:1, and 4:5. At a 4:3 aspect ratio with a maximum photo size of a generous 3648 x 2736 pixels.

Don’t be put off by this digital camera’s top-of-the-line features aimed at the most discerning photographic enthusiasts. The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera also has all of the bells and whistles you’d expect from a Canon digital camera. Special shooting modes include a Low Light mode and fun on-board filters such as Poster Effect, Nostalgic, Fish-eye Effect, and Stitch Assist for panoramic photos. You can also rely on the standards like Red Eye Reduction, a Skin Tone corrector, and a Black & White or Sepia mode to reproduce vintage looking photos on the fly.

A Handheld Movie Maker

The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera allows you to record in rich, bright high definition video at a whopping 1280 x 720 pixels. Even though this digital camera definitely earns its compact size label (at a nifty 3.93W x 2.30H x 1.16D inches), the microphone is able to pick up impressive stereo sound. One independent review site stated that the sound was “surprisingly full-bodied” for a digital camera in its class. The S95 also makes it easy to enjoy all of your HD videos and up to 130 photos directly on your HDTV. To enjoy this feature you will have to separately purchase a mini-HDMI Type C connector for direct connection to an HDTV monitor. HD video is shot at 24 frames per second while the 640 x 480 pixel and 320 x 240 pixel sizes shoot at 30 frames per second.

Small in Size But Large Where It Counts

The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera sports a feathery weight of 6 ounces - almost unnoticeable in a handbag or pocket - and is the smallest and lightest digital camera in its class. Don’t get us wrong, you won’t be wishing for a larger camera with this digital camera’s impressive list of features and its 3.0-inch color LCD monitor with wide viewing angle.

What Comes In The Box

The Canon PowerShot S95 digital camera comes packaged with a lithium-ion battery pack, battery charger, a wrist strap, an audio/video cable to plug your digital camera directly to your TV, a USB interface cable for direct connection into your PC or printer, and Canon’s Digital Camera Solutions CD-ROM.
