Although the megapixel and optical zoom is low when compared with the same price range but its image quality is very great Used it for light painting and exposure photos, great quality too!
The "expert" reviews (like the one on DPReview) are not so good to P300, but the user reviews on Amazon and other stores are very good. My old compact, Canon Ixus 970 IS (SD 890 IS in the US) died with “lens error” after 2 years and 2 months (2 year warranty was over), so I was searching for another...
I Use to own a sony t-77. it has an excellent size and good appereance. But photo quality was poor and night shots even worst. Decide to pick this camera and it just great. Image quality is excellent and night shots are awesome. Very easy and confortable to use.
One of the best cameras i have ever own.

Summary: While image quality is there and controls are very responsive, certain important aspects of the P300 are slow: shot-to-shot speed, autofocus and video-recording start. Battery-life is below average as well.

Short extract: Nikon's 12-megapixel P300 is marketed as a high-end and higher-quality compact digital camera—possibly even high enough to replace a much larger DSLR.
Conclusion: I love the way the Nikon P300 looks. Its styling is retro, recalling those old famous Leica cameras. That's about all I like about it. Image quality is probably average for a compact with a sensor this size. Video quality is poor, despite the massive full HD-resolution.

Summary: A scientific, in-depth analysis with side-by-side comparisons
Short extract: The Coolpix P300 is yet another new entry from Nikon for this year’s CP+ photography trade show in Yokohama, Japan. With its f/1.8 lens and 12.2-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS , the P300 is aiming for high quality photos in a compact form factor.
Conclusion: The P300 is an intriguing camera for advanced amateurs looking for something small and sleek. The f/1.8 lens is bound to lure in photographers that crave low light performance without the bulk of an SLR .
