What get a Garmin?

The most important feature to look for in any GPS device is the quality of reception. The satellite navigation system that Garmin uses is the SiRF Star III receiver to accept satellite signals. Even the simplest Garmin model comes with spoken voice instructions, so that you don’t have to keep looking at the display. This feature comes in quite handy, especially while driving. The display is clear and readable in the day as well as at night. Most of the Garmin car GPS units feature an anti-theft lock. Unless you specify the four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number) or drive to your security location (that you set), you can’t unlock the unit for use.

Most of the Garmin GPS units feature only one button for switching them on and off; all other controls are operated via the touchscreen interface. City Navigator maps are preloaded into these GPS devices, along with POI (points of interest) data. You can view maps in 2D or 3D, and zoom-in and zoom-out of maps for easy viewing.

Bluetooth GPS devices are ideal for receiving calls hands-free, and SD card slots are available to store all of your information. MP3 player, audio book player, and time zones are some of the other built-in features of Garmin GPS units. The Nuvi series of Garmin GPS devices provides you with the correct time of any region in which you currently traveling.

Keeping up with the Joneses

Garmin provides three types of optional software that you can install from SD cards via the memory card slot. This additional software provides you with many convenient options, for example, using the Travel Guide software, can get you information about POIs such as restaurants and ATMs. The Language Guide software lets you have the instructions spoken in any other language or dialect through its multilingual word bank and phrase band, while the Savers Guide software is like a “coupon book” that will inform you about any discount offers from participating member shops in your current location for which you are eligible. A latest upgrade by Garmin to GPS technology is the Site Visitors Alerts, which you can use to find out about visitors to your website.

Many of the Garmin GPS units come with features to inform you about accidents, hold ups, or road construction that may lie ahead on your route, and provide you with a new route to reach the destination, for a smooth journey.
