Nintendo Wii

Nintendo has always been on the cutting edge of gaming technology and trends and they really turned the gaming industry on its ear when they introduced the Wii in late 2006. Nintendo Wii’s are, to date, the best selling video gaming console in the United States. Nintendo Wii is different because you use your Wii remote (also called a “Wiimote”) to control your movement on screen. A sensor picks up movement, speed, and other spatial information from this sensitive remote and translates it to the game play making it truly an interactive gaming experience like no other. You can also add to your Wii console by purchasing the Wii Fit package which can help you lose weight, tone up, improve balance, and more. The game titles offered for this particular platform are varied and offer something for every age range. Mario Brothers and Super Mario are consistent favorites. In addition to games, you can also watch your own DVD movies and watch online content with an internet connection. Nintendo Wii Buying Guide

Kelkoo.com

Introduction

The Wii is Nintendo’s home video games console that has stood up quite well to competition from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, perhaps because Nintendo has targeted the Wii at all age groups. With features like motion-sensitive controllers, fabulous video games, including Nintendo-only franchises such as Mario and Zelda, online capabilities, and innovative Nintendo accessories such as the Wii steering wheel, the console offers great value for its price. Our buying guide covers the major features of the Wii, and is packed with enough information to help you make your buying decision.

The Nintendo Wii’s Journey

The Nintendo Wii video games console hit the market in 2006. It was Nintendo’s fifth video games console and was a clear winner when it was launched onto the market. In spite of stiff competition from PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Nintendo has been able to hold its own by delivering innovative games to its customers.

As far as market statistics are concerned, the Nintendo Wii video games console had the highest worldwide sales in September 2011. The video games console also set a new record for the best selling console in a single month during December 2009 on the US market.

The Nintendo Wii’s predecessor was the Nintendo GameCube. The Wii is backward compatible with GameCube games, which should please gamers who had initially invested in GameCube. The company has also announced plans to develop the Nintendo Wii’s successor – the Wii U. This home video games console is thought to have a touchscreen controller, precision motion controls and full HD graphics.

Hardware: A Closer Look at the Nintendo Wii

Dimensions: The Nintendo Wii video games console is small and lightweight. In fact, it is the most compact home video games console on the market. The Nintendo Wii is 1.7 in wide, 6.18 in long and 8.48 in deep. It weighs just over 2.6 lbs too, making it a true lightweight.

Console design: You can place this video games console either vertically or horizontally. The front of the console has a slot-loading media drive for the Wii optical discs and GameCube game discs. The blue indicator glows briefly when the console is turned on and pulsates on receiving new information via the system’s online capability. The video games console features two USB ports at the rear and an SD card slot.

The launch pack: If you choose to get packages from certain merchants, the can Wii come with the Mario Kart Wii game, the Wii Wheel Nintendo accessory, Wii Remote Plus Controller, Nunchuk Controller, Sensor Bar, standard composite cable, and power cord.

Nintendo Wii colors: The video games console and the remote were initially available only in white, but later on black and red versions were released in a limited edition. This is in contrast to the company’s earlier plan of bringing out the Nintendo Wii in a range of colors including white, black, silver, lime green, and red.

What Makes the Nintendo Wii Such a Great Gaming Console

Controls: The Nintendo Wii video games console comes with the Nintendo Wii Remote Plus controller with wireless motion controls. The Wii Remote has built-in accelerometers and infra red detection capabilities to help in game play. These work with the Sensor Bar to give you match-winning moves.

The Wii Remote Plus helps you control the game both by using the control buttons as well as by physically swinging the console itself. The Remote Plus includes a rumble feature as well as speakers. In addition, the Nintendo Wii Remote Plus includes the following controllers too:

Nunchuk: The Nunchuk gives greater flexibility while playing games. It can be connected to the Wii Remote Plus by using an external connector. The Nunchuk also has remote sensing technology. The design has two buttons and a control stick. This controller allows you to move the characters along, even as your Wii Remote performs other actions.

Classic Controller: The Classic Controller is sold separately and is connected to the bottom of the Wii remote controller. This traditionally-designed controller is required to play games from the Virtual Service console.

Wii MotionPlus: The MotionPlus is available as an accessory and it gives the players higher levels of precision and performance while gaming. It can be attached to the end of the Wii remote and allows for comprehensive motion sensing.

Games: The Nintendo Wii gives you access to a huge variety of video games. The genres include action and adventure, sports and racing, edutainment, first-person action, music, fitness, lifestyle, party, puzzles, strategy games, role playing, and simulation.

The Virtual Console allows you access to classic video games from the Nintendo library, such as old favorites like NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Saga Genesis and Turbografix titles. You can shop for these video games using Wii Points.

Wii Online: A broadband connection will give you online access right on the Nintendo Wii video games console. With Netflix membership and a streaming disc, you can access your favorite TV shows and movies. You can also shop for games at the Wii Shop Channel and the additional Wii channels can be downloaded for free.

WiiWare: This is yet another online service from Nintendo Wii. The service lets you access the latest video games that you can download in exchange for points. You can also try out the video games using WiiWare demo. Available only for select games, the trial will not cost you anything. The Internet Channel allows you to view your e-mail and browse the Internet.

Mii characters: The Mii characters make your game play on the Nintendo Wii very interesting. You can either create your own Mii characters or download them. You can use these cartoon figures to play video games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit Plus. The Mii channel helps you create characters that resemble your friends or family members.

Parental control: The Wii Parents feature helps you choose games and content suitable for your child as per ESRB ratings. You can also impose extra parental controls whenever your child uses the Nintendo Wii online. The Wii Parents feature gives you access to video games and content by providing you the power to bypass the control by using a confidential pin code.

The Nintendo Wii’s features and library of games has made it popular with gamesters across the world, and the Nintendo accessories are another favorite.  For the best prices on the Nintendo Wii, or its accessories, have a look at what our trusted online retailers have to offer.
