A barcode scanner is a useful device that utilizes a lens and a light source to scan printed bar codes. These devices can be either hand-held, resembling a futuristic laser weapon, or resting on a counter top or tethered to a cash register. They are typically found in shopping environments and are often connected with a coiled cord to the cash register. Most bar scanners contain circuitry to decode and analyze the data contained in the bar code, such as pricing and product information.
